Testing in Brusnika.LMS is a test builder for assessing employees' knowledge. Tests can be created manually, in a quick mode, with Nika.AI, or imported from Excel. A test can be used as a standalone assessment, assigned to employees, or embedded into a course, learning program, or learning track.

Brusnika.LMS supports seven question types: single choice, multiple choice, yes/no, matching, sequence ordering, fill-in-the-blank, and open-ended questions. Closed questions are checked automatically. Open-ended answers can be reviewed by an assigned reviewer or evaluated with Nika.AI.

Test results can also be used beyond a single assessment. A test result can contribute to an employee's competency assessment, and an individual development plan can be created automatically when an employee fails a test.

Who uses tests

The main roles are:

  • Moderator — an Author or Editor who creates, configures, and publishes tests.
  • Employee — takes assigned or available tests.
  • Reviewer — evaluates answers to open-ended questions.
  • Manager and moderator — review results and reports.

Creating a test

Brusnika.LMS provides four ways to create a test.

Advanced creation

Advanced creation provides full control over the test and consists of four steps:

  1. General.
  2. Parameters.
  3. Blocks.
  4. Questions.

The settings can be edited later.

Quick creation

Quick creation requires only a test name and questions. Other settings use default values and can be adjusted later in advanced mode.

Creating a test with Nika.AI

Nika.AI can guide the test creation process through a five-step wizard.

1. What are you checking?

Enter the test name and topic.

2. Knowledge source

You can:

  • paste text;
  • upload a PDF, DOCX, or TXT file up to 10 MB;
  • provide a link to a public web page.

If no source is provided, Nika.AI uses publicly available information from the internet. When a source is provided, it is used as the primary source.

3. Parameters

You can specify:

  • number of questions;
  • number of answer options;
  • passing score;
  • difficulty: easy, medium, hard, or adaptive.

Adaptive difficulty combines questions of different difficulty levels.

4. Question types

Select the question types that Nika.AI should generate.

5. Parameter review

Before generation, you can review the settings and add additional instructions in natural language, such as asking Nika.AI to focus on figures and deadlines.

After generation, the test opens in the editor while a Nika.AI chat remains available beside it. You can ask Nika.AI to simplify a question or add more questions on a specific topic.

The draft is saved and restored when you return to it.

Test creation with Nika.AI is not available in the on-premises version of Brusnika.LMS.

Import

Tests can be imported from Excel using the provided template or from a previously exported test file.

The Excel template can be downloaded directly from the import screen. An imported test can be published immediately.

Question types

Brusnika.LMS supports seven question types:

  1. Single choice.
  2. Multiple choice.
  3. Yes / no — the option labels can be renamed.
  4. Matching — pairs of elements and their matches.
  5. Sequence ordering.
  6. Fill-in-the-blank — gaps marked as ##word##.
  7. Open-ended question — a text answer with optional file attachments.

Open-ended questions are reviewed by an assigned person or Nika.AI.

Images can be attached to answer options and matching elements. Questions can be reordered by drag and drop.

Test settings

A test can include a name, a logo selected from the media gallery, a description, a catalog section, and topics. Words preceded by # are used as tags.

Competencies and individual development plans

You can link competencies that the test is intended to confirm.

The “Create IDP on failure” option can automatically create an individual development plan for an employee who fails the test, based on the selected competencies.

Difficulty and test type

You can set:

  • difficulty — easy, medium, or hard;
  • test type — intermediate or final.

The test type affects the default gamification points.

Time and attempts

You can configure:

  • test duration in minutes;
  • whether the timer is displayed;
  • number of attempts;
  • waiting period between attempts in days;
  • passing score as a percentage.

A value of 0 means no time limit for duration and no limit on the number of attempts.

XP can be awarded for passing a test.

Certificates and feedback

A certificate can be issued automatically using a selected certificate template.

A feedback questionnaire can also be displayed after the test.

What employees see after the test

There are four result-display modes:

  1. answers are hidden and only moderators see the result;
  2. questions are shown with “correct / incorrect” status;
  3. questions, answers, and scores are shown so employees can see their mistakes;
  4. the answer is shown immediately after each question.

For the last mode, custom feedback text can be configured for correct and incorrect answers.

You can also:

  • prevent employees from returning to previous questions and changing answers;
  • shuffle questions;
  • shuffle answer options;
  • require an answer to every question;
  • show a random selection of questions.

For example, with “Show N questions out of M,” different employees can receive different question sets.

Test availability

A test can be:

  • hidden from the catalog;
  • restricted to selected departments;
  • restricted to selected employees;
  • available only within a defined date range.

Once the availability window ends, the test cannot be taken even if it was previously assigned.

Hiding a test from the catalog does not affect existing assignments.

Topic blocks

Questions can be grouped into topic blocks.

For each block, you can configure:

  • whether the block is active;
  • how many random questions should be selected from it.

Blocks can also be shuffled.

The system supports bulk assignment of a block to selected questions.

Question weights

By default, every question has a weight of 1.

Custom weights can be assigned to individual questions. In this case, the passing score is calculated based on question weights rather than simply the number of questions answered correctly.

Anti-cheating controls

Brusnika.LMS provides several mechanisms to make copying more difficult.

Copy protection

Question text cannot be selected, the context menu is disabled, and the page cannot be printed.

Paste protection

Text cannot be pasted into open-ended questions. The answer must be typed manually, while file attachments remain available.

Watermark

An employee's name can be displayed over the questions. The watermark remains visible in screenshots or photographs of the screen.

Reviewing open-ended questions

Each open-ended question must have an assigned reviewer.

A reviewer can be:

  • assigned to an individual question;
  • assigned to all open-ended questions at once.

New open-ended questions inherit the previously assigned reviewer.

An open-ended question cannot be saved without a reviewer.

Manual review

Reviewers work in “Review Answers and Assignments.”

The “Awaiting Review” queue shows the number of answers requiring review.

For each answer, the reviewer can see:

  • the employee's answer;
  • the employee's name;
  • attached files;
  • a “Correct / Incorrect” assessment;
  • a comment.

The employee receives a “Your answer has been reviewed” notification after the review.

Reviewed answers are stored in an archive and can be restored.

Reviewing with Nika.AI

A review template can be created for open-ended answers.

The template includes:

  • evaluation criteria;
  • maximum score;
  • passing score;
  • an optional reference answer;
  • evaluation mode.

Available modes are:

  • strict match;
  • partial match;
  • expert assessment.

The system includes five standard evaluation criteria.

A template can use the following knowledge sources:

  • text;
  • a PDF or DOCX file up to 10 MB;
  • a link to a lesson, course, or learning program.

Multiple answers can be selected and reviewed in bulk using the same template.

Each reviewed answer displays the Nika.AI score and the “Reviewed with Nika.AI” marker. A reviewer can review the result again.

Nika.AI-based answer review is not available in the on-premises version of Brusnika.LMS.

Taking a test

Before starting, employees see an introductory card containing:

  • description;
  • time limit;
  • passing score;
  • XP;
  • number of questions;
  • difficulty;
  • topic;
  • competencies confirmed by the test.

A timer is displayed when a time limit is configured.

When the time expires, the test ends.

Progress is saved, allowing an employee to leave and continue later. If the system detects an unfinished attempt, it offers the employee the option to continue it.

The same test cannot be taken simultaneously in two browser tabs or on two devices.

After completion, the employee sees:

  • percentage score;
  • passing threshold;
  • “passed / failed” status;
  • answer review, if enabled.

If attempts remain, the employee can select “Try again.” If a waiting period has been configured, the system shows how many days remain before another attempt becomes available.

When a test contains open-ended questions, the employee is informed that the final results will become available after the answers are reviewed.

On mobile devices, the screen can be rotated.

Employee test statuses

A test can have the following employee statuses:

  • assigned;
  • self-enrolled;
  • not started;
  • in progress;
  • passed;
  • failed.

The employee area “Tests, Surveys and Assignments → My Tests” contains active and overdue assigned tests, tests in progress, completed tests, and tests shared with the employee.

Test catalog

Tests can be displayed as cards or as a list.

The catalog supports:

  • search;
  • filtering by section;
  • filtering by tags;
  • star ratings;
  • comments;
  • “Published / Draft” status;
  • sharing with colleagues;
  • copying a link;
  • assigning a test;
  • deletion.

When deleting a test, the system warns if the test is used in courses or learning programs.

Moderators can see a summary with the number of tests, number of questions, and number of unpublished tests.

A test can also be opened by a guest using an external link.

Assigning and embedding tests

A test can be:

  • assigned to employees;
  • assigned to selected departments;
  • restricted to selected employees;
  • made available for self-enrollment;
  • embedded into a course;
  • embedded into a learning program;
  • embedded into a learning track;
  • shared through a link.

This allows testing to be used either as a standalone assessment or as part of a larger learning process.

Retakes and attempt management

When an employee has used all available attempts, a moderator can open “Manage Statuses and Attempts” and:

  • grant additional attempts;
  • reset an attempt;
  • change the status manually.

Reporting and analytics

The Reports section includes a Tests group.

It contains:

  • Employees — Tests;
  • Tests — Employees;
  • Specific Test — Employees, including individual attempts;
  • Departments — Tests.

Reports can be grouped by question to identify questions that employees found difficult.

The “Completed During Period” report shows all completed tests within a selected period without requiring a specific test to be selected.

Automatic reports include:

  • Testing Results — average score, retakes, and difficult questions;
  • Needs Review — open-ended questions awaiting manual review.

Reports can be exported to Excel and PDF.

Nika.AI can also provide insights from reports.

Through the API, the system can provide test-attempt reports and notifications about new results.

How testing connects with other Brusnika.LMS features

Competencies

A test result can be added to an employee's competency assessment with “Test” as the source.

Individual development plans

A failed test can trigger automatic creation of an individual development plan for selected competencies.

Courses, learning programs, and learning tracks

A test can be embedded as a module in a course, learning program, or learning track.

Certificates

A certificate can be issued automatically after a test using a selected template.

Gamification

Tests can award XP. Gamification points can also depend on whether the test is intermediate or final and can be associated with test completion and review of open-ended questions.

Surveys

A feedback questionnaire can be displayed after the test.

Settings

Most test-specific settings are configured within the test itself.

Portal-level settings include:

  • certificate templates;
  • gamification points for tests and final tests;
  • feedback questionnaires.

Limitations and conditions

The following conditions apply:

  • an open-ended question cannot be saved without an assigned reviewer;
  • choice questions require at least two options and a marked correct answer;
  • question text is limited to 5,000 characters;
  • the overall test size is limited; for an excessively large test, the system suggests splitting it into parts;
  • the number of tests on a portal depends on the subscription plan;
  • Nika.AI test creation is not available in the on-premises version;
  • Nika.AI review of open-ended answers is not available in the on-premises version.

Typical use cases

Knowledge check after a course

A moderator creates a test, sets the passing score, and adds it to a course. Employees complete the course and then take the test.

Mandatory employee testing

A test is assigned to selected employees or departments. The administrator can set an availability window, limit attempts, and configure retakes.

Tests with open-ended answers

Closed questions are checked automatically, while open-ended answers are sent to an assigned reviewer. The employee receives a notification after review.

AI-assisted review

A reviewer creates an evaluation template, defines criteria, and runs a bulk review of selected answers with Nika.AI. The results can then be checked manually.

Competency assessment

A test is linked to selected competencies, and its result becomes a source for the employee's competency assessment.

Automatic IDP after failure

If an employee fails a test, Brusnika.LMS can automatically create an individual development plan for the selected competencies.

Retakes

The number of attempts and the waiting period are configured in the test. Once attempts are exhausted, a moderator can grant additional attempts or reset one.
