Integrations mentioned in this article
Gamification in Brusnika.LMS is a motivation system based on points (XP). Employees earn points for learning and other activities, progress through levels, appear on leaderboards, and can exchange accumulated points for gifts in the gift store.
Moderators and editors configure scoring rules, levels, leaderboard visibility, and the gift store. Managers can award points to their direct reports, while employees can view their balance, earning history, level, leaderboard position, and available gifts.

How gamification works
The core of the system is an employee's point balance. Points are awarded for activities that the organization chooses to recognize as part of learning, development, and participation.
For example, an organization can define how many XP an employee receives for completing a course, lesson, test, program, or knowledge base material. Points can also be awarded for events, IDP completion, 360-degree assessment participation, feedback, ratings, comments, and other configured activities.
Levels are based on accumulated points. Each level has a defined point range. Brusnika.LMS provides four default statuses:
- Beginner;
- Specialist;
- Expert;
- Guru.
Organizations can replace these names with their own.
Employees can also use their accumulated points in the gift store when it is enabled.
Earning and awarding points
The Gamification settings define how many points are awarded for each supported action.
Points can be awarded for:
- completing a course;
- completing a lesson;
- viewing a knowledge base material;
- completing a test;
- completing a final test;
- completing a learning program;
- participating in an event after the application is accepted;
- reviewing open-ended questions;
- participating in a 360-degree assessment as an evaluator;
- completing a feedback questionnaire;
- rating a course or test with stars;
- commenting on a course or test;
- completing an IDP.
For a course, the scoring method can be configured either as a fixed number of points or as the sum of points assigned to its modules. The system also allows the organization to decide whether lessons inside a course should generate points separately.
Manual point adjustments
A moderator can manually add or deduct points for selected employees.
The adjustment includes:
- the employee or employees;
- the number of points;
- the action associated with the adjustment.
The operation is recorded in the history as an adjustment.
A directory of actions can be created for manual awards. Each action can have a name, category, and point value. For example, an organization can create an action called “Mentoring”.
Negative point adjustments can only be made manually by a moderator.
Managers awarding points
Managers can award points to their direct reports through the “Subordinate Assessment” section.
An optional approval workflow can be enabled. In that case, the manager's award becomes a request that a moderator can approve or reject.
Levels and employee rankings
Brusnika.LMS allows organizations to create employee levels based on accumulated points.
Each level has a point threshold. The default statuses are:
- Beginner;
- Specialist;
- Expert;
- Guru.
Custom status names can be used instead, and the default settings can be restored when needed.
My Rating
Employees can open “My Rating” to see:
- their current level;
- the level progression ladder;
- how many points remain until the next level;
- their point history;
- the monthly leaderboard;
- the all-time leaderboard;
- a “You” marker identifying their own position.
The employee's points can also be displayed in the “My Learning” widget on the home page.
The rating symbol can be customized with an organization-specific icon. The icon is displayed in the header, rating section, and gift store.
Leaderboard
The leaderboard ranks employees according to their accumulated points.
A moderator can control whether the leaderboard is visible to employees. When it is available, employees can see the current top performers and open a detailed point history for a participant.
The history includes:
- date;
- points;
- source of the award.
The leaderboard visibility setting applies specifically to the “My Rating” page.
Gift store
The Gamification module can be used together with a gift store where employees exchange accumulated points for available rewards.
The gift store can be enabled or hidden from employees.
A gift card can include:
- an image;
- a name;
- a description;
- a price in points;
- remaining stock.
Gifts can be organized into storefront categories.
The “Buy” button is disabled when an employee does not have enough points or the gift is out of stock.
Managing the gift store
Moderators manage the store under “Settings → Gift Store”.
A product can have:
- a name;
- a price in points;
- available stock;
- a category;
- an image.
Storefront categories can also be created.
Buying a gift
An employee selects a gift and confirms the purchase. This creates a purchase request.
Points are not deducted when the request is submitted. They are deducted only after a moderator approves the purchase. At the same time, the gift's available stock is reduced.
A moderator can:
- approve the request;
- reject the request with a reason.
The menu tile displays the number of new requests, and moderators receive a notification about a purchase.
Overriding points for individual objects
General scoring rules can be overridden for individual objects.
For example:
- a test can have its own value in “Gamification Points”;
- a material can have its own “Points for viewing (XP)” value;
- a knowledge base folder can have an individual value.
For a knowledge base folder, 0 means that no points are awarded for viewing its materials. An empty value means that the general gamification settings are used.
This allows general gamification rules to be combined with individual scoring settings for specific learning and knowledge base objects.
Use cases
Launching gamification
An organization can start with a basic configuration:
- Enable the Gamification module.
- Set point values for courses, tests, and events.
- Configure employee levels.
- Upload a custom rating icon.
- Add gifts to the store if needed.
- Enable the leaderboard.
The store can contain different types of rewards, such as branded merchandise, an additional day off, or lunch with a manager.
An employee buys a gift
- The employee checks their balance in “My Rating” or the gift store.
- They select an available gift.
- They click “Buy” and confirm the purchase.
- The request is sent to a moderator.
- Once approved, the points are deducted and the gift inventory is reduced.
A manager rewards an employee
A manager opens “Subordinate Assessment” and selects “Award Points”. For example, the manager can use the “Mentoring” action.
If approval is enabled, the request is sent to a moderator for approval or rejection.
Reports and analytics
The Gamification module includes an “Employee Rating” report showing employee points, levels, and totals.
Additional point-level details are available in the leaderboard, including the date, number of points, and source of each award.
Through the API, employee points are available read-only.
How gamification connects to other Brusnika.LMS features
Gamification is connected to other Brusnika.LMS modules through activities that can generate points.
These include:
- courses;
- lessons;
- tests;
- final tests;
- learning programs;
- knowledge base materials;
- events;
- open-ended question review;
- 360-degree assessment;
- feedback forms;
- IDPs;
- comments;
- course and test ratings.
This means the point system can recognize not only course completion, but also other learning, development, and participation activities.
Using gamification inside business systems
Brusnika.LMS can be used together with business systems where employees already work. However, whether a specific gamification feature is available inside a particular business system depends on the corresponding integration and its current implementation.
The existence of a Brusnika.LMS integration with a specific CRM or other business system does not by itself mean that the entire Gamification module is available inside that system.
