Competency Management in Brusnika.LMS is a module for building an organization's competency model, defining expected competency levels, creating role profiles, and connecting competencies with employee assessment and development.
The module supports competencies with descriptions and behavioral indicators, assessment scales, target levels, thematic groups, and job or role profiles with competency matrices.
Competencies can be used together with 360-degree assessment, individual development plans (IDPs), career positions, courses, tests, and knowledge-base materials.
What competency management enables in Brusnika.LMS
In Learning Management β Competencies, users can work with the competency model through three tabs.

- define behavioral indicators or use a single-level competency;
- set target levels using an assessment scale;
- set target levels for individual indicators;
- connect competencies with development activities or courses from the catalog;
- search competencies and filter them by status;
- publish and unpublish competencies;
- use a library of ready-made competencies with indicators;
- import competencies from documents;
- generate competency models with Nika.AI;
- create job and role profiles;
- define competency matrices, target levels, and competency weights;
- assign employees to profiles;
- configure assessment approval;
- show competency profiles in the employee's personal account;
- create profiles manually or with Nika.AI;
- generate a course or test from a profile and automatically assign it to employees in that profile after publication;
- create and publish assessment scales;
- organize competencies into thematic groups.
How the competency model works
The competency model in Brusnika.LMS combines several related objects: competencies, indicators, assessment scales, thematic groups, and job profiles.
Competencies
A competency can include:
- a name;
- a description;
- behavioral indicators;
- a target level;
- target levels for individual indicators;
- a development activity or course from the catalog.
A competency can be single-level or can contain indicators that describe its manifestations at different levels.
Competencies can be searched and filtered by All, Published, and Draft status. They can also be published or unpublished.
A competency cannot be published without indicators when indicators are enabled for it. If a target level is defined, an assessment scale is also required.
Competency library
Brusnika.LMS includes a library of ready-made competencies with indicators.
A moderator can review a ready-made competency and add it to the organization's own catalog.
Importing competencies from documents
Competencies can be imported from:
- Word;
- PDF;
- Excel;
- PowerPoint;
- CSV.
The maximum file size is 10 MB.
When a document is imported, Nika extracts competencies and saves them as drafts. A moderator reviews and edits the result before publication.
Creating a competency model with Nika.AI
Nika.AI can generate a competency model based on organizational context.
The model-generation parameters include:
- model name;
- model type: entire organization, department, function, or project team;
- purpose;
- industry;
- organization size;
- business type;
- customer interaction model;
- geography;
- management style;
- HR direction;
- values and principles;
- industry-required competencies;
- regulatory and professional standards;
- level of detail: up to 10, 50, or 100 competencies;
- digital maturity level.
The generated model can be edited and duplicate competencies can be merged before saving.
Nika.AI results are saved as drafts and must be reviewed by a moderator before they become part of the published model.
Job and role profiles
A job or role profile defines the competency requirements for a particular position.
A profile can contain:
- job or role name;
- competency matrix;
- target competency levels;
- one assessment scale for the profile;
- competency weights;
- employees assigned to the profile;
- approvers;
- a final approver;
- the option to show the profile in the employee's personal account.
Competency weights
Competencies in a profile can have weights, representing their share of the profile.
These weights are used when Nika.AI generates a:
- course;
- test;
- individual development plan.
Profile approval
A profile can have designated approvers and a final approver.
The profile can have the statuses:
- Pending approval;
- Approved.
When the relevant assessment process is initiated, approvers receive assessment tasks.
Creating a profile with Nika.AI
A job profile can also be created with Nika.AI.
The input includes:
- name;
- purpose;
- role;
- department.
Nika selects competencies and weights and matches them against the existing competency catalog.
The generated profile can be reviewed and edited before use.
Generating a course or test from a profile
Nika.AI can generate a course or test based on a job profile.
After the generated course or test is published, it is automatically assigned to employees belonging to that profile.
This creates a direct connection between competency requirements and learning activities.
Assessment scales
Assessment scales define competency levels.
A scale can include:
- levels;
- scores;
- level names;
- level descriptions.
A scale can be created manually or by using Create from template.
After configuration, the scale can be published and used in competency models and job profiles.
Thematic groups
Thematic groups organize competencies into groups based on a particular topic.
They are configured in the Settings tab of the Competencies section together with assessment scales.
What employees see
Employees can view their competency information in:
My Profile and Progress β My Competencies.
The employee view includes:
- profiles;
- requirements;
- indicators;
- assessment scale;
- current level;
- source of the current level.
The current level can come from:
- 360-degree assessment;
- manager assessment;
- a test;
- a manually entered value.
Connecting competencies with learning and development
Competencies are connected with several other Brusnika.LMS modules.
Courses and tests
Competencies can be linked to courses and tests that confirm them.
Learning results can also be used in development scenarios, including an IDP after an unsuccessful result.
Knowledge base
Knowledge-base materials can be associated with a competency using the Develops competency relationship.
360-degree assessment
Competencies and profiles are used as the assessment set in the 360 Assessment module.
The 360 Assessment module works only when Competencies is enabled.
Individual development plans
Competencies are used in individual development plans.
An IDP can be connected with competencies, while assessment and learning results can contribute to the employee development process.
Career positions
The competency model is also used with career positions and can form part of the requirements for career development.
Competency relationships
| Object | Relationship |
|---|---|
| Course | A course can confirm a competency |
| Test | A test can confirm a competency |
| Knowledge-base material | A material can develop a competency |
| 360 Assessment | Competencies and profiles form the assessment set |
| IDP | Competencies are used in development plans |
| Career position | Competencies are used in career development |
Use cases
Building a competency model from scratch
A model can be created with Nika.AI:
- Open Competencies and select Create with Nika.AI.
- Specify the industry, organization size, and model goals.
- Review the proposed competencies and indicators.
- Edit the suggestions and save them as drafts.
- Create an assessment scale from a template in Settings.
- Review and publish the competencies.
Role profile and assessment
For example, a company can create a profile for a sales department manager, add the required competencies, set target levels and weights, assign employees, and configure approvers.
Creating a profile with Nika.AI
A user can provide the role, department, name, and purpose. Nika selects competencies and weights and matches them with the competency catalog. The resulting profile can be edited before use.
Connecting competencies with learning
Competencies can be connected with development courses or activities and with courses, tests, and knowledge-base materials.
Reports and analytics
Brusnika.LMS does not have a separate competency report.
Competency levels are available through related processes and reports, including:
- 360 Assessment, including comparison with target levels;
- IDP reports;
- career-track reports.
Therefore, the Competencies module should not be described as having a standalone competency analytics report.
Who uses competency management
Depending on the workflow, the module can be used by:
- moderator-editor or HR β builds and maintains the competency model;
- approvers β participate in employee assessment through profiles;
- final approver β participates in profile approval;
- employee β views their competency profile, requirements, levels, and assessment sources.
Specific permissions depend on the relevant object and workflow.
Limitations and conditions
The following conditions apply:
- a competency cannot be published without indicators when indicators are enabled;
- a competency cannot be published without an assessment scale when a target level is specified;
- Nika.AI results are saved as drafts and require moderator review;
- the number of competencies is limited by the subscription plan;
- 360 Assessment works only when Competencies is enabled;
- there is no separate competency report.
